The first thing that impressed me with this company is that they do not exclude based solely on age or on pre-existing conditions (which is common for other companies). I was having a hard time insuring my 8 year old dachshund with systemic lupus who had been in remission for 2 years. I picked up a Pets First insurance brochure one day and took it to my vet's office for their opinion. They hadn't heard of PetFirst and recommended VPI whom they were accustomed to dealing with. I compared the plans and opted to go with PetFirst. I recommend PetFirst to everyone I know simply because practically all of the year's premiums can be recouped in a pet's annual visit. In addition, I did have to make an extensive claim only a few months into my policy and it was paid quickly and without hassle. The vet's office told me PetFirst had called to ask some questions and request some additional records but said their staff was nothing less than polite (not accusatory like I was trying to defraud them or something). I have only had to call PetFirst one time and they answered all my questions with incredible politeness. In addition, they understood that I have "kidz" and not "cats." (lol) I have also found their website easy to use. These people are great and I would recommend them to everyone. In fact--I DO!

There are actually several good reasons for this coverage, and you should consider all of them before making your decision. You are all aware, that owning a purebred dog comes with a lot of responsibility. If they are breeding stock or show dogs they will need lots of medical attention including numerous tests for your record books. All these tests and treatments add up to major money, which is why you should consider AKC pet insurance.

The great thing about AKC pet insurance is that it should allow you to get reimbursed for your vet bills. It also ensures that your animal will always receive the bet veterinary care regardless of the expense.

The American Kennel Club Healthcare Plan is designed to help offset the high cost of veterinary treatments, surgery, and prescriptions. On the American Kennel Club website they have a list of claims that have recently been paid to dog owners who have purchased an AKC pet insurance plan. Many pet health insurance firms have recently gone to a co-pay type system (just like your health insurance) for most disaster type claims, and offer reimbursement plans for preventative care such as teeth cleanings, vaccinations, flea & tick care, etc. This works out well for us pet owners as the things that most of us need help with will be covered after paying a small deductible; usually around $40, and then the insurance plan will pick up the remainder. Preventative care is usually reimbursed 100% as these are the things that lower the insurance companies risk for covering your pet. But, if anything major does happen, you can rest easy knowing that you're covered.

Many people will want to put this decision off. Maybe even saying something like "My dog is still young, so I don't need a vet pet insurance plan.". This can be a very costly attitude to take. It is in your better intrests to enroll your dogs or other pets before they become adults. Not only will your premiums be lower with a younger pet, but they will also stay lower as you can be "grandfathered in" and keep your rates. With accidents, serious illnesses, or anything like that it doesn't take long for the costs to mount. It can very quickly become overwhelming or completely deplete your savings.

For example, I recently found out that one of my cats has a heart murmur. The vet noticed it when we had him in for an annual exam and vaccinations. Since they needed more information, the vet wanted to do an ultrasound. By the time you added in the anesthesia, the ultrasound fee, the vaccinations, and the exam fee it was almost $600. Thanks to our pet insurance plan, we only had to pay our $50 deductable and a few small incidental costs (about $75 total). Not bad at all. I suppose the naysayers will want to know how much Tony's pet insurance plan cost. We choose to pay annualy (you can also pay monthly for almost the exact same cost), and it was around $450 for his 12 month policy. $450 (plan cost) + $75 (exam/ultrasound) = $525. I guess that doesn't seem like much in the way of savings, as it only would have cost us $75 more to pay out of pocket ($600 vet bill - $525 insurance/exam/ultrasound = $75), but here is the kicker. He will now need an ultrasound every 6 months to keep tabs on his situation. We also live in an area where fleas and ticks abound (who doesn't). His next ultrasound will only cost us $75, and his flea/tick treatments are covered. We come out WAY ahead.

I realize that not every situation is like ours. Heaven forbid that any of you have the pet trouble that we do. But, with 2 dogs and 2 cats I'm glad we have the pet health insurance plan. Can you afford to gamble that nothing will ever happen to your pet? We can't. That's why I started this blog. To get the word out about pet insurance and help you find the best plans for the money. On a fundamental level, pet health insurance provides pet lovers with peace of mind knowing their pets will receive the best veterinary care in a time of need. Pet health insurance is still insurance, though, so there is also a practical reason to purchase pet health insurance.

In general, the purpose of insurance is to help you manage risk. For example, if your home is destroyed there are very few of us could afford to rebuild it from our personal savings. Since this is the case, we pay a premium to an insurance company in exchange for the peace of mind that the insurance company will pay to rebuild our home if something unfortunate should happen. This is the reason we care auto and health insurance as well.

Insurance companies place the premiums from their policyholders into a pool to pay claims for those policyholders that experience a loss, pay administrative expenses, and pay any dividends to the owners of the insurance company in years of profitability. Insurance companies are regulated to ensure the premiums they charge are high enough to prevent financial insolvency and to monitor business practices.

One of the basic concepts of insurance is that a “risk” (i.e., life, house, car, etc.) must be insurable.
